Oracle has reached a settlement with OR that will see it give the U.S. state $100m in cash and free enterprise software licences.

In a press conference at OMSI on Thursday, Gov. Kate Brown announced the deal, which includes cash payments to OR and a 6-year agreement for products and services to modernize the state’s IT systems. The remainder of the settlement consists of technological investments from Oracle, including a six-year unlimited license agreement for software and technical support at no cost to the state.
“I am grateful to the parties for coming together to slay the many-headed dragon that the litigation has become”, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said on Twitter, adding that the settlement “could save Oregon hundreds of millions of dollars over the next several years”.
The settlement ends all legal action related to the failure of the exchange. The amount will be divided three ways so that $60 million will be used to cover the costs for customer support, $25 million will cover the state’s litigation costs for the lawsuit, and $10 million will be given as a grant to the school of science, math and technology programs.

“But, the beauty of the deal is that if we choose to take full advantage of the free ULA’s, we are uniquely situated to modernise our statewide IT systems over the next six years – something we could not otherwise afford to do”. The suite includes products created to assist financial management, budgeting, planning, financial forecasting, financial reporting, database management, and business intelligence.
Originally, Oregon demanded more than $6 billion in damages from Oracle and accused the company’s executives of fraud, filing false claims and racketeering.
OR has existing agreements with Oracle for support and products that are now being used throughout government, and the settlement would not affect these existing agreements.

The state had paid Oracle $240 million and spent more than $16 million to four law firms to fight the company.
