North Carolina Boycott Continues as ACC Pulls League Championships from the State
The NCAA this week announced it would also move all 2016-2017 championship events out of the state of North Carolina due to HB2 because lawmakers had declined to repeal the law.

Right on the heels of the NCAA’s announcement that it was pulling seven sports championship games from North Carolina – including the first and second rounds of the all-hallowed Men’s Division I Basketball championships – the Atlantic Coast Conference has followed suit.
As NPR reported on Wednesday, the ACC’s decision removes eight neutral-site championship games from the state in sports ranging from football and baseball to soccer and swimming. It had been slated to take place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, but will now be looking for another home.
“The decision to move the neutral site championships out of North Carolina while HB2 remains the law was not an easy one”, said Clemson President James Clements, chairman of the league’s council.
“I really don’t think he understands what a transgender individual is”, he said, referring to the so-called “bathroom” provision of HB2, which requires transgender people to use public restrooms that correspond with the gender listed on their birth certificates. A questionnaire that event organizers must complete during the bidding process asks them to identify any local laws that might lead to discrimination. If anything, the ACC’s choice is even more significant to North Carolinians.
North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore claims that HB 2 was never about discrimination.
Another North Carolina Republican legislator is raising the prospect of repealing a law about LGBT rights that’s caused the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference to pull championships from the state this week.
In addition to the ACC’s decision to move their title games out of the state, several other high profile events have been cancelled including concerts by Bruce Springsteen, Demi Lovato, and Maroon 5.
The ACC and NCAA decisions have been a blow to North Carolina’s tourism and business communities, which rely on servicing fans attending major sporting events.
“We guess that there are more people who maybe supported HB2 who are now saying, it’s not worth the cost”, Scavo said.
The 2016 ACC Men’s basketball tournament is scheduled to be in Brooklyn this year but in 2017 it’s scheduled for Greensboro.

The NCAA also noted several cities and five states – Minnesota, New York, Vermont, Washington and CT – bar official travel by public employees and representatives of public institutions to North Carolina.
