Cauvery protests: Indian, foreign companies resume operations in Bengaluru

Karnataka had suffered violence after the Supreme Court ordered the state to release River Cauvery ‘s water to Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed for calm in the region and is expected to meet Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah. The century old disagreement has had resulted in multiple settlements in the past, but none has resolved the issue.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Road Transport buses have started operating to all places except Tamil Nadu.

The Cauvery River originates in Karnataka and flows into Tamil Nadu before eventually feeding into the Bay of Bengal. Two people were killed in the violence – one when the police opened fire at protesters, and another while trying to avoid a lathicharge.

Curfew was clamped on the night of Sept 12 after violence erupted with dozens of buses and lorries with Tamil Nadu registration being set on fire as mobs let out their fury over reports of some incidents of attack on Kannadigas and their property in the neighbouring state.

Karnataka has taken off state-run buses travelling to Tamil Nadu.

“I am personally pained at the developments”, Modi said.

He added, “Breaking the law is not a viable alternative”.

According to ASSOCHAM, widespread loss would accrue to IT and ITES facilities due to poor attendance for the last several days.

Actor Silambarasan aka Simbu, who was rumoured to have commented over the ongoing Cauvery row between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, said hed never garner publicity by making political statements.

Curfew has been lifted in Bengaluru as normalcy returned on Wednesday, two days after violence shook the country’s tech hub in protest against the release of Cauvery river water by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu, police said. But trains and flights are operating to Chennai and other cities in Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka government had yesterday made a decision to obey the Supreme Court’s modified order asking it to release 12,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till September 20 and warned that those indulging in violence during protests against release of water will be dealt with an “iron-hand”.

In a video message to the people of the state, Karnataka Chief Minister Sidddaramaiah warned of stringent action against any act of vandalism or disturbance to peace. More than 100 police patrol teams were pressed into service for round-the-clock protection of businesses owned by people of Karnataka origin. No new incidents have been reported, Bengaluru City Police said in a Twitter post.
