Ivanka Trump had previously announced at the Republican National Convention that her father would work to make child care affordable and accessible for all.
Trump said: “So it’s meant to benefit, whether it’s in same-sex marriages as well, to benefit the mother who has given birth to the child if they have legal married status under the tax code”. The policy does not include paternity leave for fathers, which Ivanka Trump contended in a Cosmopolitan interview was because the plan aids “mothers in recovery in the immediate aftermath of childbirth”.
“Respectfully, Hillary Clinton has been around for decades and there’s no policy benefitting either mothers or fathers in terms of paid leave”, Ms. Trump said. I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids.
Trump did not lay out how much the proposals would cost, but insisted the extra spending would be offset by economic growth and other cuts.
Ivanka Trump declined to comment, but a source close to her told FoxNews.com: “It’s disappointing that such a respected women’s publication would be so dismissive of these proposed policies which clearly advance the cause of helping women and families of all backgrounds, simply due to their feelings about the Republican nominee”.
Tuesday night at his speech in Aston, Pa., Trump brought up to the stage several female Republican congresswomen – Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) – to help sell his new policies to American voters. “The plan, right now, is focusing on mothers, whether they be in same-sex marriages or not”, the businesswoman responded.
And in promising paid maternity leave, Trump is sharply breaking with conservative orthodoxy that the government not mandate what benefits companies must give workers.
Neither Trump nor his campaign offered an estimate of the cost of his proposal, but the campaign said it would pay for the six weeks of maternity leave offered to mothers by eliminating fraud in the unemployment insurance program. “The lack of seriousness of this proposal is no surprise given his history of disrespecting women in the workplace and the fact there’s no evidence he ever provided paid family leave or childcare to his own employees”, Clinton aide Maya Harris said.
Trump said: “Well, those are your words, not mine”.
According to the GOP nominee’s campaign, “the Trump plan would provide relief to every working- and middle-income earner who has child care expenses”. It’s a classic strategy passed down along generations of Trumps, just direct your hostility towards the interviewer and try to distract them if you don’t want to answer their questions.
“There’s plenty of time for you to editorialize around this, but I think he put forth a really incredible plan that has pushed the boundaries of what anyone else is talking about”, Ivanka Trump said”.
“You haven’t heard the past few Republican nominees talk about child care a lot”, she said.

Ivanka replied that she wasn’t aware of the interview. In some states, child care has now become more expensive than a college education.
