5 remain missing after Tel Aviv building collapse

The rescue workers believe that there is still a chance to find the missing persons who are apparently located on the lowest level of the underground parking garage.

An under-construction vehicle park building in northern Tel Aviv collapsed on Monday morning, killing two people, and injuring 23.

Rescue efforts to save those trapped under the rubble of a collapsed parking facility in Tel Aviv became frantic Tuesday, as concerns mounted that possible survivors were running out of oxygen. More than 20 people were wounded in the accident, which is under investigation.

Fifteen workers were rescued in the first hour of the collapse, according to firefighters, with a further three saved later on.

The shocking incident happened this morning in the Ramat Hahayal neighborhood in the major Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

Mr Odeh highlighted the plight of construction workers, many of them Palestinian, who often work in unsafe conditions. “They say some movement shook the building”, he said.

Israeli television reported 15 people missing, but police had not confirmed the number.

Mizrahi said the search-and-rescue operation could go on for days.

But the channel said there are fears that people are trapped inside. There is still no obligation on a developer to employ a supervisor on a building site to supervise the contractor, and construction sites still operate without appropriate controls.

Colonel Golan Vach, from the Home Front Command, said seven people were believed to be trapped in the rubble at different locations.

The Times of Israel reports that rescuers are attempting to dig a tunnel to reach two construction workers who have been talking to them through the rubble.

The economy ministry said in response that it would focus on enforcing construction industry regulations.
