A day after declaring that he would return portfolios to his uncle but should have a say in ticket distribution, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday congratulated Shivpal on his appointment as Samajwadi Party’s state president.

He once again reiterated his support for younger brother Shivpal Yadav and said he too had done enormous work for the party, and mused that he would not allow all this to happen in the party to which he has given his sweat and blood.

Mulayam Singh, however, accommodated son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in the candidate selection process of the state parliamentary board.

However, Shivpal resigned from all the posts late on Thursday night.

Akhilesh Yadav said his government had acted against its own leaders who were found indulging in land grabbing.

But he also took a few pot shots at his nephew without naming him.

Akhilesh, on his part, told a news channel, “I have two duties, as Chief Minister and as son. SP is a family and there are no differences in the party”, he said at a media event here.

Akhilesh told a television channel he had been hurt by his removal as state president. I’m coming here after a discussion with Netaji (Mulayam). In this all active political members of family are invited, which include Shivpal Yadav, his wife Sarla Yadav, son Aditya, other brother Ramgopal Yadav, his son Akshya Yadav, MP Dharmender Yadav.

Asked how he would respond if someone demanded the Chief Minister’s post, Akhilesh Yadav replied: “Probably I will give away that too, provided the one who wants it really deserves it”.

Netaji is my father and his brother”. But now there is no problem within. Akhilesh had come to me.

Meanwhile in Etawah, hundreds of Shivpal’s supporters gathered at Shastri crossing and sat on dharna demanding that all portfolios be restored to him.

Akhilesh also seemed to have agreed to take back another minister, Gayatri Prajapati, known to be close to Shivpal and Mulayam, whom he had earlier sacked. They expected the Chief Minister to primarily focus on developing Uttar Pradesh, putting an effective law and order machinery in place.

The outspoken Ram Gopal had chided Mulayam in public yesterday for his “mistake” of removing Akhilesh as state president instead of asking him to resign to lighten his burden before the elections.
