N. Carolina governor links fate of LGBT law to Charlotte

Governor Pat McCrory Friday quietly withdrew the lawsuit he filed in May against the Obama administration as a response to the Dept. of Justice demand he explain if or how he will enforce HB2, his radical, extremist, far-reaching law targeting transgender people.

A spokesperson for the city of Charlotte said the city “received a statement from the North Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association (NCRLA) and is taking it under advisement at this time”.

Any actions toward repealing a North Carolina law that limits non-discrimination protections for LGBT people must be preceded by the city of Charlotte’s repeal of a pro-LGBT ordinance, Gov. Furthermore, Governor Pat McCrory has assured NCRLA that he is willing to call legislators into a special session next week for this goal if both the city and legislators have the votes for repeal.

The North Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association calls on Charlotte City Council to repeal ordinance #7056 immediately, on Governor McCrory to convene a special session of the NC General Assembly, and on the NC House and Senate to repeal House Bill 2 in its entirety. The North Carolina governor cited costs of litigation, noting that his state is also the defendant in a lawsuit filed against him by the Dept. of Justice on similar grounds. She issued a statement Tuesday saying, “I do not want men or boys legally to be able to share the same locker rooms or bathrooms with my 16-year-old daughter and her classmates or teammates”.

“It would be easy to say we’re moving it”, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver clarified on Friday.

It was thought that HB2 would be repealed or revised in North Carolina, but lawmakers in the state last month adjourned, leaving the law barely changed.

A better first step would just be repealing HB2 altogether with no stipulations. “This arrangement would create problems, not solve them”, the group said in a statement. Both senators, who are running for re-election, voted for House Bill 2 in March. He says there are conditions to repealing HB2. “Resets us to the status quo as of January 2016”, Tarte wrote on Facebook.

“No party is pure in this issue and we both need to walk the process back and start over”. If the cost of repealing House Bill 2 is getting rid of the Charlotte ordinance, the effect would be dropped protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people that companies and organizations say are needed.
