At least 80 Syrian soldiers killed by US-led air strike – monitor

The US-led coalition on Saturday said it carried out an airstrike against Daesh terrorist group near the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor.

At least 62 regime soldiers were killed in a US -led coalition air strike at an army position near Deir al-Zor airport on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group said, citing a source at the airport. It quoted Russian Maj.

In Moscow, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, citing the Syrian General Command, said 62 LSyrian soldies wree killed and over 100 injured, the state-backed RT.com reports. He says the planes came from the direction of the border with Iraq.

Early reports said that US F-16 fighter jets and A-10 tank busters attacked a Syrian army contingent at Jebel Tharda and killed 30 soldiers.

A strike list issued by the USA on Saturday said it had carried out a strike at Deir al-Zor against five Islamic State supply routes, as well as strikes near Raqqa and elsewhere in Syria.

“If the strikes were a targeting error, the bombings were evidence of Washington’s stubborn refusal to co-ordinate its military action in Syria with Russian Federation”.

Under a fragile truce deal negotiated by the United States and Russian Federation, fighting in Syria is to halt on all fronts across the country except those held by ISIS.

Syria’s five-year civil war between President Bashar Assad and rebels seeking to topple him has drawn in regional and global powers and allowed militant jihadist groups including Islamic State to gain territory and inspire attacks.
