Tamil Nadu observes state-wide bandh over Cauvery dispute

Most shops and business establishments remained closed in Chennai, while very few private buses were seen on the roads.

However, government buses are running with heavy police security.

“The government should have protected people from Tamil Nadu in Karnataka. they must solve the issue once and for all”, Kanimozhi was quoted by NDTV.

Later, the directive was altered to 12,000 cusec until September 15.

A PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Centre to protect Tamils in Karnataka and Kerala in the wake of recent attacks on them in both states over the Cauvery issue and alleged assault on PWD officials.

A member of Naam Tamizhar Katchi party, had also succumbed to his burn injuries on Friday after he tried to self-immolate himself here on Thursday.

Leader of the opposition and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) treasurer M.K. Stalin was taken into preventive custody after staging a protest march and trying to enter the Egmore railway station in Chennai on Friday.

Reiterating the need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to resolve the issue, he said the Prime Minister was “more busy in tweeting rather than responding to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s appeal to convene a meeting of all states concerned to find out an amicable solution”.

However, he said there was a clause in the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal providing sufficient scope for mediation in case of any State being unhappy over the verdict.

“We reiterate neither any strike nor bandh or agitation can take place when the court has passed an order and it has to be complied with”. She said the Centre can not “keep away” from the Cauvery issue, adding efforts should have been made earlier to protect Tamil people and their properties in Karnataka.

Large-scale demonstrations were on in Thanjavur and the Cauvery delta region by VCK, MDMK and Left parties. A Puducherry Road Transport Corporation was stoned on Vazhudavoor road, following which it was brought to the shed.

Police said they were taking steps to prevent violence.

When the court questioned his locus standi, Shivakumar said he was a social activist and a resident of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and added that he was aggrieved by the violence in both States in which public, private properties were being damaged by local groups.

While government-owned public transports, government offices, schools, colleges, banks and others carried on with their routine, majority of shops remained closed across the state.

Karnataka unit of BJP on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the raging Cauvery row with Tamil Nadu was not possible at this juncture and termed the demand by the Congress government in the state as “petty politicking”.

“To enable farmers take up samba cultivation, I have directed release of water from Mettur Dam from September 20, 2016”, she said.
