Guest column: Debates should be moderated in public interest

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this week called for excluding moderators from the upcoming debates between himself and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, citing concerns that he will be treated unfairly. “I think he’s been treated very unfairly, but they all said that I won”, Trump said on Squawk Box.

After already throwing a tantrum over the proposed presidential debate schedule because it overlaps with a few NFL football games, Donald Trump is now proposing we just ditch the whole concept of moderators altogether because the “system is being gamed”. “Well now the new person’s going to try to be really hard on Trump just to show, you know, the establishment what he can do”. The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler asked how someone like Lauer could “not set the record straight on Trump’s bogus claim of being against the war in Iraq”, suggesting he “needed to do more homework, for both candidates”. He said during his secret intelligence briefings that he could read the body language of the briefers, which showed the generals were unhappy with President Obama for not listening to their advice. “Now, it’s a very different system and I don’t happen to like that system. I think I’m in the best possible position to be able to understand that and prevent it”. “But certainly in that system he’s been a leader far more than our president has been a leader”, Trump said during the Commander-in-Chief Forum.
