US independent Senator King says he will back Iran nuclear deal

In explaining his support for the Iran deal, which would lift sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program, Emanuel said it is “the best alternative, and not only that, it is exactly the end point that the original coalition and sanctions were meant to produce”. “If Iran is to acquire a nuclear bomb, it will not have my name on it”, Mr. Menendez said in an advance copy of his speech.

Four senators and a couple of House lawmakers seem to have successfully upstaged Menendez’s much-expected opposition to the Iran deal, by lining up to endorse the agreement over the last two days.

To prevail, opponents will need 11 more Senate Democrats to join in voting to override a presidential veto of a bill blocking the accord. Indeed, Sen. Menendez called the administration’s promise that a “snapback” provision would bring back the sanctions in case Iran is in violation a “fantasy”.

At the time, Cohen affirmed his strong Jewish identity and support for Israel, but accused Netanyahu and Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner of playing political games and engineering the speech as a tool to be wielded against the Obama administration. Chuck Schumer of New York, who said earlier this month he would vote against the agreement. Sen. At least 230 Republicans, as well as 10 of 188 Democrats, are opposed to the deal.

After the deal is rejected, President Barack Obama is also sure to veto the move, member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani told Trend August 19.

More than half of the Senate Democrats and Independents of the 34 needed to sustain a veto are backing the deal.

In Monday’s letter, organized by the progressive group Ameinu, the rabbis said they believe the agreement “blocks Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon”, but expressed concern about Iran’s “support for terror” and asks that the worldwide community “dedicate additional resources to confront Iranian threats to Israel and other states”.

Had he supported the deal, Flake likely would’ve been the lone Republican to do so. The senator said Iran has broken past promises to give up its nuclear ambitions.

Although Khamenei – who has the final word on all policy matters – praised Iran’s negotiators after the deal was announced, he has not explicitly said whether he endorses its terms or disagrees with them.

In a statement released Wednesday, Donnelly, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said only the “steadfast resolve” of the U.S. and its allies can stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
