Novak Djokovic: Lost my nerve in important moments
Wawrinka beat Djokovic in four sets on Sunday to win his third Grand Slam.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion has a penchant for raising his level of play Down Under, as he has six Australian Open titles to his credit and has won the tournament five of the past six years.
“We know each other for many, many years”, Wawrinka said on the court after the match, speaking to Djokovic, per USA TODAY. I am me. I have been achieving something that I never expect the last three years, I have been winning three grand slams and it’s more than incredible.
It’s not to be mistaken: Wawrinka wants to work to improve and get better, and Norman, a former world No. 2 and Grand Slam finalist himself, said they are continuously trying to solve that. “I couldn’t stand, sorry”.
Broadway performer Norm Lewis, who was set to sing the national anthem in Arthur Ashe Stadium prior to the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, asked the crowd to observe the moment “in memory of those lost 15 years ago today”. “You were the more courageous player in the decisive moment and you deserve this title”, said Djokovic.
Del Potro was then on the upswing in the earlier part of his career, and would go on to win a Grand Slam only three years later; now, the Argentine, who is 29, has enjoyed nothing short of a stellar comeback after several injuries and surgeries sidelined his career for a significant time. Wawrinka entered Sunday having spent nearly exactly twice as much time on court as Djokovic during the course of the tournament: about 18 hours versus about nine hours. “Because you think, ‘God, he’s just got to mis-hit a few of them when he’s down break points.’ And he never did”. He was one point from losing in the third round against 64th-ranked Dan Evans, but eventually won in five sets.
The Swiss looked much the stronger in the fourth set, and doubts only emerged when Djokovic called for the trainer to treat a blister – something that riled Wawrinka as it occurred ahead of his service game.
Though Djokovic emerged from the medical break with more spring in his step, he was not able to break Wawrinka again, a persistent problem that may have cost him the match as he converted only three of his 17 break point opportunities.
Twelve-time major champion Djokovic begged to differ after missing out on a third US Open title.
“This is incredible”, he added.
“He loves to play in the big matches”, Djokovic added. I am completely empty. There was so much emotion with the crowd, the atmosphere, the stadium, it’s been an fantastic night’. “That’s probably one of the best shots in the game”, Djokovic said. “It was a demanding match, but you were the better player”.

The 2009 US Open victor Juan Martin del Potro and 2014 champion Marin Cilic both interrupted the Big Four’s dominance but only Wawrinka has repeatedly defied them.
