Chiefs cap rally with OT victory

Late in the second quarter, wide receiver Keenan Allen was running a route and fell down with a knee injury. They should be inspired to beat the Chiefs after they were embarrassed at home by Kansas City in a 30-0 wild-card loss in January. The Kansas City Chiefs won 33-27.

Smith threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns to rally his team from a three-touchdown hole, then scored on third-and-goal on the first possession of overtime for a heart-stopping 33-27 victory over the San Diego Chargers in their season opener Sunday.

“It was a game where for three quarters and change, we had control”, Rivers said. “That’s kind of the mindset we have on this football team”. Rookie Drew Kaser punted just 17 yards in the final minutes of regulation, setting up the Chiefs for the tying score.

Smith’s touchdown was under replay review, and over 12 National Football League seasons he has seen a lot of insane things happen.

In overtime, the Chiefs went 75 yards before Smith – checking out of the original play – kept the ball over the right side of the line and slipped through a crease into the end zone. In a sign of the growing confidence the Chiefs have in Smith to run the show, he checked out of a play and into the run at the line of scrimmage. Alex Smith seemed to suddenly click with his receivers and KC started driving down the field.

“It’s one of 16”, coach Andy Reid said. I would expect a decision to be made quickly, maybe even later today, whether they are just going to promote Dom Williams from the practice squad, bring in someone from the street, or maybe even a trade. He was most impressed afterward with the way he and his teammates turned the game around when there was plenty of momentum pulling them the other way.

Philip Rivers threw for 243 yards and a touchdown, and second-year running back Melvin Gordon scored the first two TDs of his career. You just have to keep fighting. We’ve also got to also be smart with it so we’ve got him for the long haul. “Everybody with eyes who saw the game has got to know, we have to close it”.

Kansas City trailed 21-3 at halftime and then 24-3 after six minutes of the third quarter.

Keenan Allen’s injury stinks, but we’re already looking forward to his next comeback – SBNation.com Keenan Allen has suffered four season-ending injuries in five years. Allen caught passes for 15 and nine-yard gains. His 18-yard scoring pass to rookie Will Fuller with 12:44 remaining in the fourth quarter provided the Texans the lead for good. He showed he still has game-breaking speed, catching a 66-yard touchdown pass on his way to catching three passes for 91 yards.

While running back Danny Woodhead led the Chargers in receptions previous year and tight end Antonio Gates was third on the team, behind Allen, Stevie Johnson’s 45 receptions were fourth and Dontrelle Inman was next among receivers with 35 catches. The clinching run capped off the largest comeback in Chiefs franchise history.
