Pipeline shutdown in Alabama could send gas prices higher

“Sheetz is now being impacted by the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, a primary source of gasoline for many retailers along the East coast of the United States”. The Cahaba River has also been protected from any potential for contamination, so the fish and wildlife there are safe as well according to AL. Later, the company found that gasoline had flowed from that pond to another nearby pond through a culvert, according to federal pipeline regulators. But fix work has been interrupted by bad weather that has caused gasoline fumes to settle over the site.

Fuel supplies all over the Southeast are being affected by the Colonial pipeline rupture that happened September 9th. The closure has set off an industry-wide scramble as suppliers seek alternative ways to transport gasoline to the East Coast.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Colonial Pipeline delivers about 40 percent of the gas consumed along the I-95 corridor from Maine to Florida.

Analysts said gas prices could increase as much as 15 cents per gallon in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. “As engineers work to fix pipeline issues, we will continue to monitor the developments in the region”. It is hoped that the pipe will be fixed by sometime next week according to CNN Money, but it is now hard to pinpoint a timetable for the repairs. In fact, each executive order suspends restrictions on the maximum number of hours fuel delivery truck drivers can stay behind the wheel. Additionally, Colonial Pipeline is transporting fuel from its second pipeline to certain parts of the region, and a tanker is hauling gasoline to NY harbor to help relieve the pressure on northeastern states.

If there is any good to come from this latest fossil fuel disaster, it may well be that the alleged “proven safety” of oil and gasoline-conveying pipelines is “proven” not to be errant. Ships are now being loaded in Houston for delivery to New York Harbor. CNBC is reporting that Andy Lipow, the president of Lipow Oil Associates.is forecasting a 10 cent per gallon jump at the gas pump, which is really not that bad, considering how low the price has dropped for a gallon of gas lately. Already gas prices in Georgia are increasing.

“In fact, if motorists are running out to fill fuel cans and filling their tanks up, it will prolong the issue and it could make gas prices go higher”, said Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy, Patrick DeHaan.
