Multiple people injured after explosion in Manhattan

On Saturday night, an apparent explosion rocked the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, and social media was on the case faster than traditional news outlets.

The Associated Press reported that firefighters were at the scene and that the New York Fire Department said the blast was reported shortly before 9 p.m. New York City issued an emergency alert telling people to expect traffic delays in the area.

No other information was released.

First responders are investigating a possible explosion in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. People have been advised to stay away from the area.

There are reports of injuries but the extent is not known. The identification of the device as the cause of the explosion has not been confirmed by authorities, however.

The blast was reported near 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, a police spokesman posted on Twitter.

Police responded to reports of an explosion in Chelsea on Saturday night. The fire department was deployed to a building at 135 West 23rd Street near Sixth Avenue around 8.30pm
