Braun homers twice, Carter hits slam, Brewers top Cubs 11-3

Brewers starters have posted a 2.82 ERA over the past 25 games – the best mark in the majors over that span – and right-hander Zach Davies hopes to continue that trend.

Collmenter (2-0), acquired Wednesday from the Chicago Cubs, struck out eight in five innings and allowed two runs, four hits and three walks.

“I’m a lot more excited to face Jake Arrieta than when the wind is blowing in”, Braun said. When the water’s calm, the wind is typically blowing out. The 30-year-old has just two quality starts over his last six outings, including a rocky start against Milwaukee on August 18 in which he earned the win despite allowing five runs in 5 2/3 frames.

Maddon and Arrieta said they believe the right-hander can polish his control in time for the postseason. “If we can get him to get better command of his fastball over the next two starts, everything else will play off of that”. The Cubs held a 3-1 entering the sixth inning, with starting pitcher Jake Arrieta dominating on the mound.

“It’s just a cool moment for me”, said Ross, who announced in spring training he will retire after this season – and vowed at that point to appreciate every place and opportunity the season provided. “After that it opens up a lot of doors”.

Chris Coghlan hit a two-run homer and Kris Bryant tripled in a run in the first. I’ve got a couple of starts before October and just to prepare for that.

The Cubs are expected to start several of their regulars Sunday after playing mostly reserves the last two games with the division title already clinched.

“You’re going to see a normal lineup out there tomorrow”, Maddon said.

METS 3, TWINS 0 Bartolo Colon limited Minnesota to three singles in seven innings, Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera hit consecutive home runs off rookie Jose Berrios in the third, and host NY beat the Twins. Holding on would assure Chicago of home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.

Brewers: RHP Junior Guerra’s season was ended because of an innings limit. Broxton will miss the remainder of the season and Nieuwenhuis will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Then the Brewers blew a late lead and lost on a game-ending homer, kicking off a big party for the Chicago Cubs.
