TWO women are dead after an explosion ripped through an Australian-made ferry shuttling passengers between islands in Bali on Thursday.

The injured were ferried to clinics in Padangbai and then to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

Those on board have been taken off the boat, Karangasem police chief Bambang Sudarso told reporters. Some reports say a battery may have short-circuited above a fuel tank, causing it to blow up.

“The explosion happened because of.a gas cylinder close to the engine”.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two people who were killed, but AFP cited police saying that one was a woman and that she died from head injuries.

The boat was heading towards the island Gili Trawangan.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the explosion, but a member of the forensics team investigating the scene said initial indications are it was an accident.

Passengers on board the fast boat included Korean, British, French, and German citizens.

“About five minutes after we left we saw an explosion and we saw people with injuries.it is not fire, only explosion and smoke”, Ms Carvalho said.

Indonesia’s archipelago is home to more than 17,000 islands, of which Bali and Lombok are two of the most popular holiday locations.

Aside from Germany, a manifest showed that passengers were from several other countries, including Britain, France, Italy and Spain.

He said the last annual safety check of the Gili Cat II was in February of this year.

Police investigators examine the Gili Cat 2 boat following the explosion.

“No other boat on the Bali-Gili-Lombok run can make that claim and that’s guaranteed”.
