They said they stopped immediately as soon as they were informed by the Russians that it was possible the target was actually part of the Syrian military.

Syria’s army general command said in a statement that the air strike was “conclusive evidence” of USA support for Islamic State, noting that the strike was “dangerous and blatant aggression”.
The 15-member council met for an hour on Saturday evening after Russian Federation and a war monitoring group said coalition jets bombed a Syrian army position near Deir al-Zor airport.
“If the American side does not take the necessary measures to carry out its obligations. a breakdown of the ceasefire will be on the United States”, army general Viktor Poznikhir said.

The coalition forces struck south of Deir al-Zour, the USA military’s Central Command said in a statement emailed to media.
Syrian ally Russian Federation said 62 Syrian soldiers were killed and at least 100 more wounded in strikes by “warplanes from the worldwide anti-jihadist coalition”.
Apart from the U.S. and Russian involvement, Assad is supported by Iran and Arab Shi’ite militias, while Sunni rebels seeking to unseat him are backed by Turkey and Gulf Arab states.
The US-led coalition conducted four airstrikes on the Deir ez-Zor military airport, that has been besieged by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) for months.
Syria’s war between Assad and rebels seeking to topple him has drawn in regional and global powers and allowed militant jihadist groups including Islamic State to gain territory and inspire attacks.
The statement calls it a “serious and blatant attack on Syria and its military” and “firm proof of the USA support of Daesh and other terrorist groups”.

Russian Federation has called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after the United States admitted carrying out air strikes believed to have killed Syrian government soldiers. It controls the airport and pockets of the city but is otherwise surrounded by IS.
Russian Federation convened an emergency UN Security Council Session on US-Led coalition airstrikes against the Syrian Army which Moscow fears will undermine the breakthrough ceasefire agreement that just went into effect earlier this week, Sputnik İnternational reported.
Russian Federation has bitterly complained about what it says is a US reluctance to abide by the terms of a shaky ceasefire brokered by Moscow and Washington which it says made provision for joint targeting of Islamic State and other militant groups.
The truce has largely held despite dozens of alleged violations.
While the ceasefire has reduced fighting, some violence has persisted across Syria.
The Russian Defense Ministry accused the United States of refusing to co-ordinate its operations with Russia in Syria.
The ministry added that the Russian side had never been notified of U.S. plans to carry out bombings in the Deir ez-Zor area.
The provision of aid, particularly to Aleppo, is a key part of a ceasefire deal brokered by the United States and Russian Federation that took hold on Monday, the most important move in months towards ending the country’s five-year-old civil war.

They said they feared a collapse of the ceasefire as the rebel groups regroup and increase their attacks on government positions.
