Anniesa Hasibuan Becomes First Designer to Present NYFW Collection with Hijabs
A collection presented at New York Fashion Week is the first time every model walked the event’s runway wearing a hijab. “I am overwhelmed by the warm reception from the public”, said the Indonesian designer. The silhouettes included pleated ball skirts; kimono’s over long dresses, peplum tops over sleek skirts, long overcoats and cropped jackets.

Hijabs have been a versatile fashion statement for Muslim women for centuries.
Muted pastels were the base for the collection.
Muslim designer Anniesa Hasibuan’s show was also one of the first by an Indonesian at the prestigious annual event.
Twenty-eight years of age, Anniesa began her fashion career last year when she debuted her collection in London in March.
And she chose the earthy tones of gold, green and peach to make the detailed designs. She later exhibited her collection at the Jakarta Fashion Week, Istanbul Modest Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week.
Hasibuan’s show, held at NYFW: The Shows in The Dock at Moynihan Station, was filled with luxe, layered eveningwear looks in shades of pink, blue and gold.
However, Hasibuan’s made it clear that this is not an overnight success story. “It was just really emotional for her”. She told “The Jakarta Post” her brand is out to promote decent and minimalist dressing.
While Hasibuan, 30, is a relative newcomer to the fashion industry her big entrance into worldwide fashion weeks will ensure she is not forgotten too quickly.
But it wasn’t the female designer’s first fashion week.
Hasibuan produced 48 different looks for Fashion Week, 38 of which were ready to wear and 10 of which were evening gowns.
‘The response was so positive that I have become more confident and am ready to focus on ready-to-wear garments, even though I started with couture, ‘ she told the Indonesian newspaper.
“We just want to design for ourselves, what we like to wear”.
Her collection, called De Jayakarta, featured headscarves in gold, silver and pink, metallic silver and gold long skirts, beaded shiny jackets and silky trousers. She can certainly count us as new fans.
