The bar door at Maximum Level Lounge normally would have been closed, said Whitefield.

The shooting occurred a few blocks from the Penn campus.

Both Miller and Young, a 19-year police veteran, were in stable condition Saturday at Penn Presbyterian Hospital. Her shift was nearly over.

From there, Glenn fired 5 shots into a bar injuring 2 people.

Still, an official police Twitter account said early Saturday that the most recent shooting was the work of “an individual driven by hatred”.

Employees at the Central City Toyota dealership, whose back end faces Sansom Street, said on Saturday that Glenn had ducked underneath a partially opened garage door there to hide from police at one point during the rampage.

Ross said Glenn had a 9mm Ruger and at least three magazines as well as a plastic bag with 13 to 15 live rounds.

The incident marked the second time this year a Philadelphia police officer has been shot in an ambush-style attack, and came after targeted shootings that killed officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge this summer.

“This was a horrific night”, Ross said. She was struck in her left arm and in her protective vest. She said she was “so relieved and pleased to report that he is getting excellent care and will fully recover from his wounds”. Some smashed into her body armor.

“I’m at the McDonald’s off 51st Street!” she yelled into her radio.

The officer said a suspect is in custody. The university officer was shot in the buttocks and the leg. A police officer used a belt as a tourniquet to stanch the bleeding. She was allegedly forced into a nearby apartment building and raped.

Although Galent apparently did not know Young, he was “clearly trying to assassinate her”, Ross said.

Dozens of squad cars sped to the scene.

According to Dave Schratwieser, the UPenn Officer is Eddie Miller, 56, a retired Philadelphia Police officer.

Police radio buzzed with voices.

One of the four civilians who was shot, Sara Salih, 25, who was sitting in a vehicle at 49th and Sansom Streets, near where she lived, died. The 22nd District officer who had chased Glenn from 52nd Street followed, flushing him toward the end of the alley on 48th Street, where another group of officers were pulling up.

Then the suspect shot her in the leg and resumed running east on Sansom.

The living room “lit up like firecrackers” from the lights of the police cars outside, she said.

The gunman was eventually chased into a alley, where he exchanged gunfire with police, hitting Miller, before he was killed.

The officers fired back.

The entire episode had lasted less than half an hour. The Penn officer, shot in his right ankle and right pelvis area, was wounded in that action. One officer was cracking jokes with his kids and wife.

Young was listed in stable condition at the same hospital.

Police say the motive is unknown at this time, but they do believe the incident is an isolated incident.

Salih was pronounced dead about two hours after she was found shot in her vehicle. The other officer was talking with her family. She was studying to become a paralegal. Police say the woman died and the man was in critical condition.

Police were still investigating Glenn’s background on Saturday.

This story has been revised to correct that the title of the letter was “Doomed People”.

The suspect first opened fire at a police officer in a vehicle before shooting into a bar and then at a civilian auto, as Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters Saturday afternoon.

In January, a gunman in west Philadelphia shot and wounded an officer sitting in his police auto. According to court records, he had drug-possession convictions in Philadelphia. He spent seven months in prison on a parole violation past year.

“I’ve been told repeatedly that it was a bunch of rantings that was tantamount to nothing but rambling”, Ross said at a press conference.

Ross identified the suspect as Nicholas Glenn, who is believed to be 25 but has several possible dates of birth.

Young, trapped in the vehicle, couldn’t do anything but lean over into the passenger side until the firing stopped, Ross said.
