Southern Miss’ Brian Dozier nears historic HR mark with Twins

The rookie right-hander has allowed a total of 18 runs over his last four starts with Minnesota and was optioned to Rochester following his last outing on August 25 against Detroit, when he gave up five earned runs on six hits and five walks in five innings of work. The Twins were a blur on the basepaths.

The defending champion Royals stayed four games behind Baltimore, which holds the second wild card. Dozier’s 10 home runs against Kansas City this year are the most ever by a Royals opponent. Allowing 50 hits in all, he has also allowed eight home runs, 40 runs and 38 earned runs as a big league hurler.

The New York Yankees produced a stunning come-from-behind win, while the Kansas City Royals were in fine form against the Minnesota Twins. “That’s something we try to teach to be prepared to do if they make a mistake”.

Dozier’s been so great and so powerful at a position that doesn’t always demand high power output, that he’s moved into the top-10 among position players in Wins Above Replacement, according to Fangraphs.

Berrios looked like he would get through the fifth, giving up a leadoff single before coaxing a fielder’s choice ground out and striking out Paulo Orlando, but the rookie right hander walked Hosmer to keep the inning alive, setting up Morales’ massive shot to the concourse beyond the right-field fence. This is partly due to the fact that Dozier is notoriously streaky and can disappear for months at a time, and partly due to the fact that he’s stuck playing in baseball wilderness with the Minnesota Twins. Nineteen of those dingers have come since August 1, a time period in which Dozier has been going deep every 7.8 at-bats. His third homer carried into the upper deck in left. McCarthy had a 5-6 record and 3.57 ERA in 47 relief appearances between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Several Twins players wore green t-shirts with a yellow kangaroo on it and four stars, one for each of Beresford’s career homers. The 27-year-old Beresford, an infielder, played in 1,070 minor league games before being called up on Tuesday.

Royals: OF Lorenzo Cain missed his sixth straight game because of left wrist inflammation.

The Royals send LHP Danny Duffy (11-2, 3.13) to the mound to face Twins RHP Kyle Gibson (5-9, 5.31) in the series finale.

Dillon Gee (6-7, 4.33) is scheduled to start for Kansas City on Tuesday against Ervin Santana (7-10, 3.54).
