Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin said that he sends “heartfelt prayers of recovery to my friend Shimon Peres, Israel’s 9 President”.

The medical condition of former Israeli President Shimon Peres has improved to the level where he is stable and responsive, according to the most recent update from Sheba Medical Center where he is receiving care.

Prof. Rafi Walden, Peres’ son-in-law and his personal physician, reiterated his optimistic forecast, saying that when the doctors stop the sedation for a while, Peres squeezed his hand “warmly”, when he asked him to, and seemed aware of his surroundings.

“He understood what he was told”.

“Not all hope is lost”, said Yoav Even, Channel 2’s medical reporter, after speaking with several doctors at the hospital.

He held regular meetings on Tuesday and appeared in “perfect condition”, Valdan said, before suffering headaches.

Kreiss had late Tuesday described Peres as having suffered a ‘major stroke with a component of bleeding’.

When Peres ended his seven-year term as president in 2014, he remained highly visible in public life, meeting foreign diplomats and celebrities, promoting Israeli hi-tech, inventions and products, and sending out frequent posts on his Facebook page.

In the video, in which Peres encourages the public to buy locally made products, he appears tired but is otherwise alert and coherent. His office said Peres received a pacemaker last week, added Haaretz.

Earlier this year Mr Peres was twice taken to hospital for heart problems but quickly released.

Despite his advanced age Peres worked unabatedly for reaching an understanding between Israel and Palestiians through his Peres Center for Peace in Tel Aviv, among other organizations.

“In his people’s eyes he ceased to be a politician”.

Peres shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat for the 1993 peace accords. “Shimon, we love you and the entire nation is wishing for your recovery”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. Former US president Bill Clinton called Peres’ office in order to inquire about the situation and wish him a speedy recovery.

Peres’s son Chemi told journalists late Tuesday that ‘we are going to have to take hard decisions apparently later, but not yet’. “His devotion to the state of Israel is not doubted by anybody”, Ephraim Imbar, Director of the Begin-Sadat Center told The Media Line.
