ATHLETICS 4, ANGELS 1: The entire infield ran to the mound to congratulate Jharel Cotton on a memorable major league debut Wednesday, and he showed the last-place Oakland Athletics a glimpse of a promising future when they beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1.

Carpenter drilled a solo shot to tie the game with two outs in the ninth and Randal Grichuk and Jhonny Peralta followed with homers of their own as the Cardinals rallied for a 9-7 win.

Last night’s 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals wasn’t dominant. Anyway, here are the three stars and stiffs from tonight.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Jordy Mercer stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and just one out. He left with the Cardinals 5-2 lead. The Colorado loss overshadowed a solid outing from former OR standout Tyler Anderson, who threw 7 1/3 crisp innings, allowing two runs and six hits.

Jung Ho Kang continues to swing a hot bat since returning from the DL. And on Tuesday night he picked up right where he left off prior to getting hurt. Pittsburgh, which closes the regular season with its final 10 games against the Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis, will turn to rookie Jameson Taillon in search of a spark on Wednesday.TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), ROOT (Pittsburgh) PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Mike Leake (9-9, 4.56 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (3-4, 3.25) Leake has been out over two weeks due to a bout with shingles and is hoping to pick up right where he left off. Yadier Molina holds 134 hits with 46 runs and 46 RBI.

Despite struggling at times this season and spending time on the disabled list, Kang has quietly put together another strong season in 2016.

St. Louis has been feasting on home runs. He takes the first pitch served up and sends a missile out right for a Grand Slam. The Pirates took the first, and the last, lead of the game at 5-6 after Kang’s run.

Rivero was able to come out and give Hurdle and the Pirates exactly what he was asked to give. Taillon logged a loss in his last appearance, going six innings with three hits and one run against the Brewers. Molina sliced his grand slam to right field off Ryan Vogelsong.

Cardinals: Rookie Luke Weaver makes his fourth major league start on Tuesday.

Royals 10, Twins 3: Kendrys Morales had two home runs, including a three-run blast in Kansas City’s seven-run ninth inning.

Zachary covers the Pirates for Pittsburgh Sporting News. The Cardinals remained true to their season by going 5-4 on the road trip, opening up a 4½-game lead on the Pirates but losing ground to the Mets (74-66). Unfortunately, this would prove killer in the long run. “Now I’m back on track and ready for the next one”.

Entering in the sixth with a 3-2 lead, Trevor Williams, in his Major League Baseball debut, delivered a pitch to surefire Hall of Famer Yadier Molina that would result in a play botched by newly inserted right fielder Adam Frazier.

It set the stage for Oh, who retired the first two batters.

Oh settled down and struck out Adam Frazier to end the game. Matt Carpenter sits on 109 hits with 70 runs and 59 RBI.

Peralta allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six to earn his second victory since being brought back from Triple-A Colorado Springs on August 9. The Cards made an improbable comeback by piling in three homers at the top of ninth alone to make the score 9-6 and cement the win. It was a game the Pirates had to have, it was a game they appeared to have, and then when they were one strike away from victory the wheels came off.

There really is not a whole lot left to say at this point.
