US Open 2016: Pliskova upsets Serena

She defeated Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, and followed up by advancing to the Wimbledon final and capturing a silver medal in singles at the Olympics.

Pliskova, who has been riding her own string of success in Flushing Meadows, cruised to a win in the first set, but Williams battled back down the stretch and rallied to 3-all in the tiebreak.

Karolina Pliskova has a rare opportunity: the ability to unseat two world No. 1 players in the same tournament.

“I think I will go out there trying to get my next chance against her and take the revenge of course”.

“I know it will be very tough mentally for me also because she knows that she won against me a few weeks ago”.

“I have been having some serious left knee problems”, Williams said. “I wasn’t exhausted from yesterday’s match”, said Williams. “When you’re injured, you’re thinking of other things when you should just be playing and thinking of your shots”.

Kerber, who reached the finals at the Rio Olympics as well, leads Pliskova 4-3 in head-to-head matchups, but was blown off the court in their most recent duel, losing last month’s Cincinnati final 6-3, 6-1.

Serena Williams’ 186-week reign as world No.1 is over while the women who replaces her at the top, Angelique Kerber, is through to the US Open final.

Williams said she was carrying a knee injury but conceded that her opponent was better than her.

If you handicap this match based off what both players have done in the their careers, especially this year, Kerber should win in a landslide. I mean, if I’m not used to playing this, and I really should think of something different.

Serena opened the contest with an ace but in the end it was the American’s serve that ultimately let her down as she committed six double faults, including one on the deciding point in the tie-break. I always knew I had a chance to beat anyone if I play my game.

Due to the defeat, Serena also lost the number one world ranking that she held for three and a half years, and Angelique Kerber is now the current number one women’s tennis player in the world. “But after the match I would say it’s still her choice if she wants to play”. So I will be ready for anything. I hope I don’t stop yet, that there is still one more step to go.
