The gunman ambushed an officer sitting in her police vehicle, firing off 18 rounds and hitting her eight times before taking off to continue a shooting spree that injured four others and left a civilian woman dead.

Police said that Glenn approached a marked police vehicle late Friday and, without speaking, fired 18 shots from close range at Sergeant Sylvia Young, 46, a 19-year veteran of the Philadelphia force.

Police believe the note was written by the gunman, who was shot and killed by police.

From there, Glenn fired 5 shots into a bar injuring 2 people.

The rampage left a 25-year-old woman dead after she was shot seven times in the torso, police said.

As he fled, the gunman fired multiple rounds into a white auto, striking a man and a woman.

University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann said in a statement that she was able to see Officer Miller at Penn Presbyterian Saturday morning.

Young, a 19-year police veteran, survived after leaning into her passenger seat to shield herself from the gunfire, he said.

The note was addressed to “Doomed People” and expressed hatred for law enforcement and a probation officer. In a press conference on Saturday, Commissioner Richard Ross said Glenn had “a pretty significant past” and “was well known to the police department”.

There was no information to indicate anyone else was involved in the shooting. “Absolutely remarkable”, Ross said.

He said the man ambushed Sgt. Sylvia Young, striking her several times in the arm and protective vest, and later wounding Ed Miller of the University of Pennsylvania police force. He was alert and talking to officers after the shooting, police say, and was also taken to JPS.

Ross referred to the January 7 ambush shooting of Officer Jesse Hartnett, who was ambushed as he sat in his cruiser at an intersection by a man who investigators said told them he was “following Allah”. The suspect was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m.

The suspect first opened fire at a police officer in a vehicle before shooting into a bar and then at a civilian auto, as Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters Saturday afternoon. At least two of the civilians are in critical condition. The family also told local media they tried to have him committed for a mental-health evaluation and claim police said for that to happen, he would have had to hurt himself or others. He said Glenn was well-known to the police department.

Ross says the suspect also shot into a bar, striking a security guard in the leg, and used a woman as a shield before shooting her in the leg.

The note was found on the gunman, Ross said.

Effective immediately, officers will be patrolling in pairs, Ross said.

Late on Friday, nearby officers heard the initial gunshots and began pursuing the suspect on foot. I think we have to keep them in our prayers.

The alleged gunman in Hartnett’s shooting, Edward Archer, now 31, of Yeadon, later confessed to police that he had carried out the shooting “in the name of Islam” and said he had sworn allegiance to ISIS, authorities have said.

According to Dave Schratwieser, the UPenn Officer is Eddie Miller, 56, a retired Philadelphia Police officer.
