One person died and 14 people were injured in an explosion in a block of flats in a Spanish seaside resort near Barcelona early today, rescuers said.

The age of the woman who died has not been confirmed but she is thought to be middle-aged.

It happened at 8:15am local time, and it caused a conflagration that resulted in the urgent evacuation of the building.

The explosion happened in a second floor flat of a seven storey block in the coastal resort.

The entire building has been evacuated as a precaution along with neighbouring blocks.

Those evacuated have been taken to a nearby sports centre.

Rubble and debris could be seen covering the affected street, but the cause of the explosion is not yet known.
