A former maths prodigy who only took up golf to prove herself to doubters, Chun is in her first season as a member of the LPGA Tour, having won playing rights by lifting her first major at the 2015 US Women’s Open.

The world number one mixed six bogeys with two birdies to card a four over par round, to be even par for the tournament.

Potter, a 28-year-old reinstated amateur from Indianapolis, also won the 2013 event for players 25 and older and finished second in 2014.

Chun double bogeyed after pulling her tee shot deep into the woods and Park picked up her first birdie of the day, cutting the lead to two with a three-shot swing.

The two South Koreans ended the day with a one-shot lead over Olympic bronze medalist Shanshan Feng and American Annie Park, who is sixth in the Rolex rookie standings. She showed good composure in overcast and somewhat drizzly weather conditions on the picturesque course perched over Lake Geneva, enjoying a run of birdie-birdie-eagle on her front nine, then starting and finishing with birdies on the back nine. I really meant it, and it was a compliment.

Tom Watson, the runner-up a year ago who won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am twice and his only U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 1982, had a 75 at Poppy Hills.

“It is a really big honor for me, but I just have to stick with my game plan”, said Chun. “She’s so sweet. Thanks to them for making me feel comfortable”.

“The Olympics has done my confidence a lot of good”, said Feng, who claimed her one and only major at the 2012 LPGA Championship. “I think because it’s the last major”.

Stallings, a three-time victor on the PGA Tour, had a 66 to match Thompson at 16-under 197 at Hillcrest in the second of four events that will determine 25 PGA Tour cards for next season.

Five victories in Korea and a third place finish at the US Women’s Open in July is proof she has the game to contend at any level and hasn’t conceded to her contemporary.

Johnson won four consecutive holes – all with pars – to square it with three holes to play.

MONZA, Italy (AP) – Defending champion Rikard Karlberg of Sweden shot a 7-under 64 to top the leaderboard in the suspended first round of the Italian Open.
