The clip, which went viral on Saturday after being shared on several social media platforms, shows an officer attacking a motorist’s auto with his baton after the driver refuses to exit his vehicle after being stopped.

Still refusing to budge, the cop then batters his windscreen – and starts cutting at the glass with his knife.

He then says again to the police officer: “I’ve got a licence and insurance”, at which point the officer again hits the windscreen with his baton.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a formal complaint had been made to them regarding the officer’s conduct.

The incident took place at Weedington Road, NW5, at around 17:00 hours on Friday, 16 September.

The footage showed the man being told to get out of the vehicle by the officers, who called him “TJ”.

It added that “as this matter is in its early stages, the officers have not been suspended or placed on restricted duties”.

‘On conclusion of the incident the officers identified that the driver was not the man in question and he was not arrested.

But the officer continues to try and remove him from the auto and alleges the man is “disqualified” and “not allowed to drive”.

He tells the officer again that he has a licence and insurance, and adds: “Look what you’re doing to my vehicle”.

Shocking footage has emerged which appears to show a uniformed policeman attacking a auto in north London after the driver does not get out.

The driver then asks the officer if he knows what he has just done and the officers replies: “I’ve done absolutely nothing, I just need to know who you are”.

The man told the officers he was not TJ and that he was recording the incident “for my safety”.

After shattering the glass, the officer then removes a knife from his belt and attempts to cut the windscreen away so he can enter the vehicle.

Leon said he spent the night in hospital as he had glass in his eyes and said he was “still in shock” over the incident.

Shortly afterwards Fontana’s passenger appears to open the door and the officer apprehends the pair with the assistance of another officer who had watched the incident unfold.

He said: “Every time he smashed the glass, fragments of glass were just ricocheting in my face”.

He said it was a case of “mistaken identity”, describing what happened as “a completely unlawful act”.
