President declares opioid epidemic awareness week
The U.S. Department of Justice has declared September 18-23 National Heroin and Opioid Awareness Week, and Tuesday’s event is part of the effort to find a solution to “a community public health problem”, according to a news release. New Hampshire leaders on the front lines of the fight against heroin reflected on the crisis in the state.

I think the awareness is definitely out there. “It’s ravaging New Hampshire right now”.
USA health regulators in recent weeks also strengthened warnings about opioids as part of their broader plan to reduce the number of deaths from abuse of these drugs, calling it a public health crisis.
Obama said, “The only way that we reduce demand is if we provide treatment and treat this as a health problem, not just a criminal problem”.
August was deadlier but saw fewer calls with 50 overdoses and nine of them fatal. Over 400 people died from drug overdoses previous year and are expected to reach the same number this 2016.
Botticelli, Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald and Principal Associate Attorney General Bill Baer will conduct discussion of the government’s efforts to help veterans suffering from opioid-use disorder.
Federal authorities are using their influence to try to combat the epidemic of heroin and other opioid overdoses sweeping High Point and other parts of the nation.
The awareness week runs from Sunday through Saturday. “In federal court, the minimum mandatory sentence for causing a death through the sale of illicit drugs is 20 years so the penalties are quite stringent”.

As part of Opioid Epidemic Awareness Week, the White House will host parents who have lost children to addiction, and U.S. Attorney’s Offices throughout the country will participate in more than 160 different events, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
