In a news conference shortly after, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said that the explosion was “an intentional act”, but stopped short of saying it was related to terrorism.

New York City experienced a very serious incident.

When asked if there existed a link between Saturday’s explosion and the upcoming events, De Blasio said it was too early to know.

It was caused by an explosive device recovered in a trash bin.

At least 29 people were hurt in the explosion, one of them seriously.

Police are advising residents of the block where the device was found to stay away from windows facing 27th Street. A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that the second device discovered a few blocks from the scene appeared to be a pressure cooker attached to wiring and a cellphone.

Pictures from the scene showed a twisted and crumpled black metal box.

Dramatic video has been released of the explosion which injured 29 people in NY last night and sent people running for their lives through the street. Trump, speaking in Colorado Springs, said a “bomb went off” before officials released details of the incident. The rest suffered various cuts, scrapes and other minor injuries from shattered glass and other debris, Nigro said.

Speaking to the press late Saturday evening following an explosion on 23rd Street in Manhattan’s Chelsea district, NY mayor Bill de Blasio said that the “serious” incident had left a “significant” number of injuries.

An explosion rocked New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood, a busy residential and commercial area in the city.

Obama is scheduled to travel to NY today and stay in the city for the next several days to attend the United Nations General Assembly session beginning tomorrow.

Chelsea is a fashionable area of the city and known for its bars, restaurants and nightlife. ‘It wasn’t like jolting or anything, everyone just went quiet’. “I want New Yorkers to be confident when they go back to work on Monday that NY is up and running and we’re doing everything that we need to do”, said Cuomo.

The package was taken to the Bomb Squad Building in the Bronx to be analyzed and the investigation is ongoing, an NYPD spokesman said.

“The president will be updated as additional information becomes available”, the official added.

The bombing came the same day as another garbage can explosion in neighboring New Jersey. The race was canceled and no one was injured.
