PARIS, Sept 18 South Korea’s Chun In-gee won the Evian Championship on Sunday and set a record for the lowest winning score in a major with her four-round total of 21 under par.

And it was one better than the men’s record set by Jason Day at last year’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and then equalled by Henrik Stenson at this summer’s Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The 22-year-old led from start to finish and her 21 under par 263 total was two lower than the women’s major record.

Chun claimed the four-shot win was a great team effort, thanking her caddie, David Jones, and her family and friends.

It looked like she might miss out on a new major record when she sent her tee shot into the left rough on the 18th.

Then, Chun glided her ball over the water magnificently to give herself a shot at history. The other was countrywoman Se Ri Pak in 1998.

Round of the day: Sei Young Kim shot a 6-under 65 on Sunday that vaulted her up the leaderboard and into fifth place.

In the third round, she erased a double bogey at the par-5 ninth with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 15th, mixing them with six birdies.

After making her record-breaking putt, Chun raised both arms in the air.

Defending champion Lydia Ko finished tied 43rd, while England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff carded four birdies but also four bogeys that saw her card a final-round 71 to end the tournament tied 12th on five under. The victor of the ANA Inspiration in April, she collected the Rolex Annika Major Award for the best overall performance in the season’s five majors. “You can kind of see that from her personality”.

The injury happened at Singapore airport when fellow player Jang Ha Na’s father lost control of a suitcase and it fell down an escalator. “It was an inner struggle, and it was going around and around, so it was hard for me to get out of that situation”.
