Rory McIlroy rallies to capture Deutsche Bank title

The Ulsterman was at his vintage best to hunt down and overturn Paul Casey’s six-shot lead with an exhibition of whirlwind shots in appropriately blustery conditions. I played some good stuff today.

Rory McIlroy secured his first PGA Tour victory for 14 months after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston on Monday.

He was four over par three holes into the tournament before playing the next 69 in 19 under.

After scuffling with his putter all season, Rory put his right hand back on top of his putting grip and it returned him to the top of the final leaderboard.

He had been ranked 130th for putting after a disappointing summer.

Not surprisingly, Kenyon’s inputs didn’t quite hold when McIlroy competed at The Barclays last week; he missed numerous close swings with the short stick as he struggled to change his routine, highlighting his poor standing in strokes gained putting.

The 27-year-old opened his final round account with a birdie at the 2 hole before adding more birdies at the 4, 7, 8 and 9 holes to make the turn in 31.

McIlroy claimed the outright lead with a birdie at No. 12 even though his drive settled into a divot in the fairway.

The Englishman’s approach shot from 235 yards at the par-five 18th landed just in front of the green and rolled up to inside a foot of the hole.

“I played some great golf and I really feel like I’m trending in a really strong, positive way”.

“I am really proud of myself for battling that first day, getting some momentum on Saturday and just going with that”. I found something. I still need to keep going with it.

He shot 67 in the second round, then ended his third round with a 3-iron that caught the lip of the cup on the par-5 18th hole, settling for a tap-in eagle and a 66. The Northern Irishman made a triple bogey on his third hole (No. 12) of the tournament Friday to drop himself to 4 over early.

ADAM Scott charged home with a 6-under 65 but it wasn’t enough to overhaul Rory McIlroy in the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.

On the 14th hole, Casey was preparing to address a almost 42-foot birdie putt when the whipping wind forced to him stop and let out a “Wow” at the gusty conditions. McIlroy also switched putters last week at Bethpage Black, though he was at the bottom of the pack in putting.
