Team Europe believes beating US is just the beginning

They face favored Canada on Tuesday night.

“I thank the kids for spanking us so hard because we had adversity early, which brought us together and clarified what we needed to do”, coach Ralph Krueger said.

Saturday’s dominating win made it clear that whoever is going to knock off Canada in this tournament is going to have to find a way to negate the Bergeron-Crosby-Marchand line that has been together since the moment Canada opened training camp.

As James van Riemsdyk put it, and some of this teammates concurred: “Certainly Tuesday is a must-win now.”.

Carey Price went almost 10 months between game action after a knee injury last season, but looks to have quickly regained past form.

“We’re here to win hockey games. Our backs are against the wall and now we have to come together as a group and figure it out”.

“I think it’d be a good start to score a goal”, Czech forward Jakub Voracek said, shaking his head.

United States of America came out flat and miscues buried them with a quickness.

The list of Americans who have to be better includes a defense corps that was burned for a ridiculous number of odd-man rushes and South Buffalo’s Patrick Kane, who was minus-2 in the game and committed a grievous turnover that led to Leon Draisaitl’s goal at 4:02 of the second period. So much so, that co-GMs Stan Bowman and Peter Chiarelli petitioned for an age exemption in goal for fear they wouldn’t have a candidate that would allow them to compete against the best players in the world.

Slovakian Marian Gaborik scored on Team Europe’s first shot when he took a ideal feed from Denmark’s Frans Nielsen and redirected it past US netminder Jonathan Quick.

“I don’t try to overthink things and overcomplicate things”, Price said. “That’s a play (controlling the puck at the blue line) I’ve made a million times in my career”.

And you know how players always say they don’t pay attention to what’s being said or written? “First of all, no matter what he did it hit Step’s helmet before it goes into the net so I think it should be a goal”.

The fact that the puck deflected off of Derek Stepan has no bearing on the ruling.

There wasn’t really much to take away from the game results-wise. American coach John Tortorella, whose hiring at this point in any arena is an act of at least mild desperation, said his major worry was that “developing quality scoring chances, it was a struggle for us”. But if after watching that game you realized that maybe this tournament has some potential for fun and it won’t (just) be a long, slow slog towards the revamping of USA Hockey’s worldwide team plan, then today will be a treat. The bench was good. “For the most part even tonight that’s what we did”.

“From the outside, we got stamped up as the underdog here”, Draisaitl said.

Team Europe, which has the benefit of varying degrees of global experience, played a relatively tight game on Saturday against the United States and was opportunistic in a 3-0 win.

“A lot of us have been on this team in 2010, 2014”, said team captain Joe Pavelski this week. Throw in this game and that’s nine periods without a goal in a best-on-best tournament.

At 14:10 of the second it looked like the US was on the board with a power-play goal off the helmet of Derek Stepan.

US general manager Dean Lombardi said this team was built to beat Canada. First on Justin Abdelkader after a point shot from T.J.

The Americans did send 17 shots on victorious goaltender Jaro Halak of the Islanders in the third period to finish with a 35-17 edge and 67-36 advantage in shots at net, but those stats are meaningless. While many have previous worldwide experience, they don’t have extensive track records in the National Hockey League or high-level global play.
