According to him, he dropped his co-star Eleanor Tomlinson, who appears in the series as Poldark’s wife, Demelza, in the sea.

During the same hour, “Victoria” drew 4.8million viewers to its ITV and ITV HD channels.

Victoria’s audience dropped from the 5.7 million who tuned in for the second episode the previous week.

Karen Thrussell, the executive producer of Poldark’s production company Mammoth Screen, said: “All are major players in the next volume of Winston Graham and Debbie Horsfield’s saga”.

The third series of Cornish drama Poldark will take place over nine episodes and is set to air in 2017 on BBC One.

Despite the hype surrounding the return of Poldark, and much hyperventilation over Turner’s inevitable topless scenes, the tin mining drama failed to match the 6.9m viewers who tuned into the launch of its first series previous year.

Irish actor Turner has won legions of fans with his brooding role as Captain Ross Poldark, and his topless scything has become one of the drama’s most famous moments.

Poldark (BBC1) and Victoria (ITV) will both be airing tonight at 9.00pm.

The series, starring Jenna Coleman as a young Queen Victoria, was the most-watched drama on Sunday night with a 23.3% audience share.

The drama, which also stars Rufus Sewell as prime minister Lord Melbourne and will later feature Tom Hughes as Prince Albert, attracted 5.7 million viewers and 6.1 million at its peak with its first episode.
