The reservation is now fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline, a multibillion-dollar project that would see crude oil transported from a Bakken oilfield near the Canadian border to IL. When District Court Judge James Boasberg rejected the tribe’s request to halt construction, the three federal agencies put out the September 9 joint statement barring further work on the pipeline pending more consultation. The panel says the order should not be construed “in any way” as a ruling on the merits of the motion. CBC’s Tim Fontaine recently traveled to Standing Rock.

SANDUSKY, Iowa (AP) – Opponents of a major oil pipeline say roughly 40 people have been arrested during a public demonstration along the project’s route in southeast Iowa.

In another small victory for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe on Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted the tribe to a special free speech permit to be able to protest against the pipeline on federal lands. “We appreciate the cooperation of the Corps in protecting the First Amendment rights of all water protectors”.

The permit issued Friday allows protesters to gather to the north and south of the mouth of the Cannonball River.
