Awards columnist Glenn Whipp pointed out that Sterling K. Brown was the first Emmy victor to bring the audience to its feet.

The ceremony started out with an political edge. IRL, Egyptian-American actor Rami Malek is uprooting Hollywood with his portrayal of Mr. Robot’s main character Elliot Alderson-a hacking prodigy with a knack for reading people both from instinct and hardcore snooping, all while living with and fighting against his mental illness.

Rami Malek, star of the hit show “Mr. Robot“, appeared shocked as he accepted his Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama. He advised Kimmel that “if you run a positive campaign, the voters will ultimately make the right choice”- then told Kimmel curtly it was a joke.

A sitcom that has aggressively taken on issues including use of the “N-word” and police brutality, “black-ish” is up against “Veep” for top comedy honors in a field that also includes “Master of None”, “Modern Family”, “Silicon Valley”, “Transparent” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”.
