Investigators have identified the suspected gunman as 23-year-old Irving Lucien Fenner, Jr. of Blacksburg Road in Grover, North Carolina.
Brackeen, 38, leaves behind a wife, Mikel, and one daughter, Daphne.
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting local police with their investigation.
Officer Tim Brackeen of the Shelby Police Department died Monday morning from his injuries after he was shot early on Saturday while serving outstanding warrants.
Police say several officers were near Parkview Street about 12:20 a.m. attempting to serve the warrant. He is in stable but critical condition.
Police say the 38-year-old Brackeen has been on the police force for 12 years and is now assigned as a K9 officer. Officers heard shots and found Brackeen wounded by gunfire.
After the shooting on Saturday, the officer’s mother, Phyllis Brackeen, wrote on Facebook that ‘the doctor said his brain shows no activity’.
The two struggled outside the suspect’s house – and Brackeen, who was wearing his bulletproof best, was shot in the chest, the Charlotte Observer reported. “Please keep everyone in your prayers”, Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford shared in an email on Monday.
Hamrick said she’s known Fenner her whole life. Despite initial panicking, she knew her son would not shoot a police officer.
Call Shelby Police Department at 704-484-6845 with any tips regarding Fenner’s wherabouts.
Officer Brackeen was given the title of “Officer of the Year” in 2012.
Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford says Brackeen is the longest serving K9 officer now with the department and loved his job.
