Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type. Type B negative and A negative blood can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients.
Donations are needed now to help ensure blood is available for patients in need, she said. When demand for the most needed types begins to outpace donations, the Red Cross alerts donors to help restock the shelves.
The Red Cross is in need of all blood types, especially O negative, A negative and B negative.
“Voluntary blood donation reduces maternal mortality and helps patients suffering from blood related diseases such as sickle cell anaemia, victims of gunshot injuries and accident victims, among others, ” he said.
In fact, the Red Cross has stated that because of traveling, up to 40 percent of regular donors may be unable to give. Type AB blood can be given to patients of all blood types.
