“The Voice” is getting the chance to sing the same tune again, winning the best reality competition Emmy Award for the second year in a row.

British TV was everywhere at the Emmy Awards – there were Brit contenders in many categories, including the John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager, Luther, Sherlock, War and Peace, Downton Abbey and Catastrophe, and it was a very big night for the BBC, which had 22 nominations, but the old principle that prestigious wards in acting and writing went to British productions did not hold up. But Kimmel chastised her at the top of the show for her consistent no-shows with a new law, the Maggie Smith Rule – winners had to be present to accept the award or it would go to the next person on the list. “Our show started out as political satire, but it now feels more like sobering documentary”.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who broke down in tears after winning her fifth straight Emmy for Veep earlier in the night, had a Jennifer Lawrence moment, almost tripping on the way up the stairs for the second to last award. Among them is “How to Get Away with Murder” star Viola Davis, who a year ago became the first woman of color to be honored as best drama series actress.

Kimmel kicked off the three-hour kudocast with a fun pre-taped segment that saw him interacting with various nominees, including rival Variety Talk Series host James Corden, that was capped off by a cameo from presidential also-ran Jeb Bush.

For her part, Kate McKinnon thanked Hillary Clinton when she accepted her best supporting actress in a comedy series award for her work on “Saturday Night Live”.

The show was surprisingly flawless, Kimmel killing it as the host and making this one of the best Emmys yet.

Sarah Paulson, who played former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, brought Clark to the Emmys and apologized to her in front of millions for not being kind in the past.

She promised to rebuild the wall between comedy and politics and “make Mexico pay for it”.

“Hollywood is doing good, but I’ll tell you women of color are doing even better”, nominee Viola Davis said on the red carpet. He then turned to actress America Ferrera and said, “Nice try changing your name to America”.

And when it comes to prestige drama, you can’t get more popular than Game of Thrones.

Anderson won for his role on the FX comedy, in which he plays the mother of a man trying to achieve his dream of becoming a professional clown. And after Vance claimed the best actor in a miniseries prize for showing audiences the struggle and humanity behind the image of the late O.J. Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, Kimmel walked onstage and cracked that Cochran was surely watching “smiling up at us”.

“The People v. O.J. Simpson” ran away with the night at the 68th Emmy Awards Sunday even as “Game of Thrones” broke a record.
