One of them, Sara Paulson, won for outstanding lead actress in a limited series; in her acceptance speech she talked about the challenge of playing O.J. Simpson murder trial prosecutor Marcia Clark in “The People v. O.J. Simpson”.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was tearful and shaking when she accepted her fifth Emmy in a row, this time for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for “Veep”.

Though an award for Louis-Dreyfus would also be her eighth, one of the previous seven was “Veep’s” best comedy series award from 2015 (she is a producer on the show).

“I’d like to dedicate this to my father William Louis-Dreyfus who passed away on Friday”, she said.

On stage, she said described Clark as a “complicated, whip smart, giant-hearted mother of two” who dedicated herself to “righting an unconscionable wrong”.

Sterling K. Brown won Outstanding Supporting Actor for the category for his portrayal of attorney Christopher Darden (beating out both John Travolta and David Schwimmer, who had been nominated for their work on the program).

It’s the TV industry’s biggest night and viewers will be watching closely to see if two of the shows from that opening video, “Game of Thrones” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, sweep.

Jeffrey Tambor won his second Emmy in a row for best comedy actor for his role in “Transparent”.

“I should know, he gave me my career”, Winkler said.

Sarah Paulson shares a smile with lawyer Marcia Clark at the 2016 Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theater on Sunday (September 18) in Los Angeles. Kimmel rushed out after Smith won for outstanding actress in a drama series.

It is the fifth time in a row she has won the award for her role in the USA version of BBC comedy The Thick Of It.

One of those awards was the biggest prize for which it was nominated: Outstanding Limited Series.
