USC hopes Pendergast can keep Stanford’s McCaffrey in check
Ukropina drilled a 50-yard field goal against Kansas State.

During halftime of USC’s loss to Stanford on Saturday, Coach Clay Helton said, the coaching staff challenged the team. Totalling 181 yards on 34 carries and three touchdowns in the first two games, Jamabo is not expected to carry this team on his back like a Christian McCaffrey; rather, he has to force the BYU defense to play honest football. Stanford would grind you into the turf, as bland as an offense could get. Davis also had 63 yards on 14 carries.
Live streaming for Stanford-USC is available via Watch ESPN. I thought we got that. He has registered 200 all-purpose yards in seven consecutive games – the longest streak for any active FBS player (no active player has registered more than two in a row).
Stanford’s secondary is possibly the best unit on the team this year, led by exciting players such as Quentin Meeks and Dallas Lloyd.
And a 56-yard touchdown reception from the first quarter, on which USC’s secondary boldly decided that it wasn’t worth allocating a man to stand near McCaffrey and make this more hard for him.
In his first start against USC after replacing four-year starter Kevin Hogan at quarterback, Burns completed 9 of 15 passes for 109 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. But his relatively quiet night points more to the dazzling show that the offensive weapons surrounding him put on.
“It’s not like they were just pounding us”, USC safety Chris Hawkins said.
After a Week 2 with lots of action but few surprises, Week 3 gives us one of our first big in-conference matchups, and a potentially risky opponent for one of our handful of ranked squads. While I picked USC in the preseason, enough evidence since the start of the season suggests the Trojans just do not matchup well enough to end the losing skid.
And USC is trying to be like Stanford? The Trojans are inexperienced and dealing with some injuries up front. Faced with back-to-back Stanford power plays, USC’s defense responded with a Marin Dasic field block and then a save from McQuin Baron.
Meanwhile, the Trojan offensive line traded missed assignments during the play for miscommunication before the snap. Look for Kyle Whittingham to keep pushing the running-back competition between Zach Moss and Troy McCormick and for defensive ends Pita Taumoepenu and Hunter Dimick to step up in Fitts’ absence.
“We love to play for Coach Helton”, Sam Darnold said, who would love to play as well after a bit more limited use this week.
-WR JuJu Smith-Schuster caught seven passes for 56 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Utah State, but he didn’t even have the ball in his hands when he made his biggest highlight.
USC has a quick turnaround, facing Utah on the road next Friday before playing four of its following five games at home. If either LA team can do that it will help their chances considerably. “I think we bounced back again”. Their set of defensive backs might be the best in the country. “Hopefully our pass rush and our coverage wins the game for us, and that’s kind of what happened tonight”. The Cardinal would tally one more goal in the next stretch, only to see Edwards collect his own rebound off a Stanford save and find a finishing touch from close range to close out the game as an 8-4 USC victory.
Stanford then used its running game to milk the clock and seal the game.

The Trojans opened the day’s action with authority, sending an early message to their hosts in pinning up a 3-0 advantage in the first period of play. “We got great protection”. The Cardinal have won six of the last eight meetings with USC.
