“We regret the loss of life and injury to any Syrian personnel affected”. Defense Minister Marise Payne told Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Monday that Australia is taking part in a US review of the airstrikes. ‘While Syria remains a dynamic and complex operating environment, Australia would never target a known Syrian military unit, ‘ the Defence Department in Canberra said. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said the aircraft that carried out the bombings – two F16 jet fighters and two A-10 support aircraft – had entered Syrian airspace from Iraqi territory.
Russian Federation and Syria said the strikes prove Washington and its allies are sympathetic to ISIS, which they say was able to briefly capture a Syrian position in the wake of the coalition attack. He called on Russian Federation to stop its “grandstanding” and said that “the biggest judgment they need to make is to stop Assad from bombing people indiscriminately, which he continues to do”.
He appeared to be referring to a US -led coalition airstrike on Saturday that Syria says killed dozens of its soldiers. The U.S. military has acknowledged that it may have struck Syrian troops in error.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency on Sunday quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as saying the move violated Syria’s sovereignty and “showed that terrorist groups enjoy USA support in Syria”.
The Saturday strike was the first known instance in which Syrian government military personnel were struck by USA aircraft, US officials said.
The US is not supposed to be assisting Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces against IS so it is unclear why it was launching air strikes in the area.
For the first time since the new cease-fire began, the Syrian government conducted airstrikes on rebel-held neighborhoods of Aleppo and a southern village, dropping barrel bombs that killed at least eight people, opposition groups said.
Also Sunday, the Syrian government and opposition reported violations of the cease-fire that went into effect on Monday.
Representatives of the Russian defense ministry could not be reached for comment Sunday about the US officials’ account.
A statement from US Central Command said the coalition conferred with the Russian military before the strike.
Russian national-security insiders said the incident made the establishment of a U.S. The incident has threatened an already-fragile USA and Russian-brokered cease-fire that has largely held despite dozens of alleged violations on both sides.
A seven-day ceasefire declared by the Syrian army expired at midnight, with no announcement of its extension on Monday.
