For the first time since the new cease-fire began, the Syrian government conducted airstrikes on rebel-held neighborhoods of Aleppo and a southern village, dropping barrel bombs that killed at least eight people, opposition groups said.
Also Sunday, the Syrian government and opposition reported violations of the cease-fire that went into effect on Monday.
Representatives of the Russian defense ministry could not be reached for comment Sunday about the US officials’ account.
A statement from US Central Command said the coalition conferred with the Russian military before the strike.
Russian national-security insiders said the incident made the establishment of a U.S. The incident has threatened an already-fragile USA and Russian-brokered cease-fire that has largely held despite dozens of alleged violations on both sides.
A seven-day ceasefire declared by the Syrian army expired at midnight, with no announcement of its extension on Monday.
