After shouting out wife Angela Bassett, the actor who brilliantly embodied Johnnie Cochran on The People v. O.J. Simpson wrapped up his acceptance speech for Lead Actor in a Limited Series by bellowing, “Obama out, Hillary in!”
“If I’m late they’ll let Tom Bergeron host”, Kimmel joked.
Sterling K. Brown took home a statuette for his supporting actor role, while D.V. DeVincentis was recognized for the show’s writing.
“They are geniuses. They are unbelievable, incredible together”, show creator Joe Weisberg said at a discussion panel for Emmy-nominated writers in Beverly Hills on Thursday. Thank you, Mark. Thank you for coming all the way from England to tear us all apart with your intricate plot.
Leslie Jones also provided some comic relief during the usually staid portion of the show when viewers meet the accountants responsible for keeping the results a secret. But she knew who to credit.
“Put [her Twitter account] in your vault please,”Jones said. Meanwhile, I’m butt-naked on CNN”.
Louie Anderson was honored as best supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of a loving but tough mom in “Baskets”. Violet Crowley has always been and will always be one of our favorite sassy characters of all time. She spoke out against violence against transgender people and also called for a toppling of the patriarchy.
“He made me start watching SNL when I was 12”, she said tearfully.
Finally he took his leave with the parting words, “I’ll see you later at the after party”.
Streaming services did well right out of the gate.
Perhaps Kimmel’s most well-crafted remark, which sparked a roar of approval from the audience as much for its pithiness as its wit: The much-honored Amazon transgender series “Transparent”, he said, “was born a drama, but it identifies as a comedy”. Indian-American Aziz Ansari also is nominated for his new Netflix comedy “Master of None”.

Excellence deserves to be awarded, but if you’re not going to show up to claim your award, we’re willing to bet the five other actresses who did are pretty peeved – not to mention more than willing to wrench that gold statue right out of your ungrateful hands.
