Alvarez wins WBO middle title

Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is scheduled to fight England’s Liam Smith for Smith’s WBO world super welterweight title in the main event of HBO Pay-Per-View’s four-fight telecast from the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (9 p.m.; $64.95 in HD).

“I offered Golovkin double, triple the amount to make the fight happen and he still hasn’t answered”, Canelo said after the fight.

Brave Smith said: “If I got offered the fight, yes, obviously I’d take it”.

But the body shot knockdown in the eighth took pretty much what he had left in his legs.

‘I believe he will pull it off and it will be the biggest win by a British boxer ever – even bigger than Randy Turpin beating Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951’. Getting the opportunity to fight those two big names has obviously helped Canelo. It’s always Canelo, and it’s Mexican Independence Day, so I know that.

The same principle applied to Floyd Mayweather Jr. before the undefeated five-division champion soundly defeated Manny Pacquiao in their long-awaited May 2015 fight in Las Vegas.

Though he is not in Alvarez’s class, Smith is a skilled fighter who is very good at hurting his opponents with solid body shots and boasts a very good uppercut.

“All I say to them is be sure you come back on the same social media, to the same magazine you criticized and make sure you come back on September 18th and hold your hands up and say Liam won”. I am the best fighter.

“I need tests like this because I need a bit of fear in me to win”, Smith told BBC Sport. It’s hard to see the fight going the distance since Alvarez has so much for going him. But Canelo is surely on the back of his mind. “I’m confident I can take his power”, added the Liverpudlian.

I’ve had a cut all the way through (training camp) so I’m going to let it heal properly now. I’m 26 years old and I’ve fought against the best.

The end came in round nine, when Canelo dug in another jarring body punch to send Smith to the canvas for the full count of ten to call a halt to the proceedings at 2 minutes 28 seconds of the round. I’m a strong fighter, I’m a fighter who can adapt to my surroundings. “I’m the best at this moment in time”.

“I’m confident I can stand and trade with him”. I just want to create my own history. I don’t want to be given a bad decision either and that’s genuine, that’s the type of person I am.
