Red Sox bring in ex-Tigers boss Dombrowski to run club

Clearly something needed to change.

Cleveland manager Terry Francona didn’t hesitate when he was on the phone with Red Sox manager John Farrell and heard when his longtime friend was going to start chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma. “Tom and I wanted to see if there was a fit for Dave within the Red Sox organization”.

He built one World Series champion, and created the framework for another. The Red Sox boldly did so with the Dombrowski hiring and it just may end up shifting them back in the right direction. Ben Cherington could not deliver that the past two years. This resulted in arguably the most successful era in the franchise’s history. Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly, Wade Miley, and Justin Masterson have all been huge disappointments.

– Dombrowski was known as an aggressive GM, and it came back to bite him during the 1989 season. Dombrowski said the Tigers might not have relied on analytics as much as other clubs but said he always was open to using whatever tools he had at his disposal. He also won’t have the presence of an aging, win-now at all costs owner looming over his shoulder, then again the never-satisfied Red Sox Nation probably offsets that.

“The offense and defense played really well tonight, especially the offense against one of the best pitchers in the game”, Kelly said. Dombrowski had a dynamo, making some slick trades (landing Cabrera, Anibal Sanchez, Austin Jackson, Max Scherzer and Doug Fister). The long list of players include Johnny Damon, Edgar Renteria, Sean Casey, Ugueth Urbina and Brad Penny.

With the win, the Red Sox improved to 54-66. We’re moving forward from that and then today’s news.

To say Cherington turned down the opportunity to stay technically is true, but hopefully the Red Sox will not waste a single phone call, email or text trying to spin his departure. Highly-regarded minor league second baseman Yoan Moncada is 20. “It’s a great opportunity”. Boston owned a 6-0 edge over Kluber and the Indians after four frames. He surrendered three last year on September 1 to the Tigers. Throughout his career Dombrowksi has shown a confidence in his abilities to gauge talent and aggressiveness to make moves he feels are necessary to put his teams in better positions, something the Red Sox desperately need in these troubling times.

With a new president and general manager, the Red Sox are looking towards the future. Next year’s roster will certainly be young. Brock Holt can start at second base if Dustin Pedroia is not healthy.

But Cherington made miscalculations heading into this season, relying on free agents Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval to bolster the lineup, while assembling a rotation without an ace, and a bullpen with too many question marks. A wild throw out of play from an outfielder is two bases for the runner(s). There’s also infielder Josh Rutledge who was acquired in the Shane Victorino trade this season and Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada coming up through the farm system.

Bradley, back in center field with Mookie Betts (and shortstop Xander Bogaerts) resting, made a spectacular over-the-head, twisting catch on a drive by shortstop Francisco Lindor for the second out of the first inning. The team has a few holes and decisions to make for the 2016 season, but the biggest priority will be getting a new general manager. That’s because the Boston Red concentrated on hitting the baseball over The Monster.

You can’t blame Cherington for not wanting to stick around after his bosses offered for him to keep his title without the authority that goes with it. She is just four years old, per Edes.
