Presidential politics plays big role at Emmys

On the series side, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” marched into Emmy history with three wins, including drama series, for the second consecutive year.

Netflix earned wins with Aziz Ansari, who shared a comedy series win for writing “Master of None”.

Two upsets and first-time Emmy wins for leading roles in a drama. “I’m a … I’m a presenter”, David, 69, said while presenting the award for Best Comedy Series.

Another favourite, the true-crime series “The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story”, a dramatization of the 1995 murder trial of the USA football star, won nine Emmys, including the award for best limited series. Then it was time for the monologue; long-time viewers of awards shows will know that a hosting gig lives or dies by the opening monologue.

“Saturday Night Live” cast member Kate McKinnon won the trophy for best supporting actress in a comedy for, officially, playing various characters.

The politically charged show also featured a surprise cameo from ex-presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, who appeared as a limo driver in a pre-taped sketch segment, asking Kimmel what it’s like to be nominated. While Paulson squirmed, Kimmel gabbed: “Everyone in LA knows, if you want to win, sit next to Marcia Clark”.

Kimmel ribbed her, “So, are you rooting for OJ to win tonight?”

Kimmel enlisted the help of his mother to make bagged snacks for the audience. That sharpened the selection process and might have affected past winners who managed to collect enough second-place votes to overcome the competition.

“She’ll tell me where it will go in our house”, he said. The star-studded night ended with “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” winning the big outstanding drama and outstanding comedy awards during the show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
