NY bomb investigation ‘leading toward terrorism’

Both bombs were filled with shrapnel and made with pressure cookers, flip phones, Christmas lights and explosive compound, The New York Times reported late Sunday, citing law enforcement officials.

Police have not said what, if any, forensic evidence they’ve collected from that device.

“In the course of rendering one of the devices safe, it detonated”.

Two men reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package after finding it near the Elizabeth train station at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Officials said 29 people were injured.

“Tonight, New York City experienced a very bad incident”, de Blasio said at a news conference near the scene in Chelsea.

The New York Police Department says it is looking for a 28-year-old man for questioning in the New York City bombing.

He continued, “But boy we are living in a time – we better get very tough, folks”.

Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, sought to present a more cautions response, underscoring the difference between the two candidates’ styles.

A second pressure cooker device found four blocks away was disassembled yesterday.

No one has been charged with any crime and the investigation is continuing says the FBI.

A pair of MA brothers used pressure-cooker bombs to kill three people and wound more than 260 in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

After touring the site of Saturday’s blast that injured 29 people in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighbourhood, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there didn’t appear to be any link to worldwide terrorism.

The governor added that NY and New Jersey were cooperating and sharing resources after the Chelsea blast and a pipe bomb explosion in Seaside Park, New Jersey, earlier Saturday, which forced the cancellation of a charity run to benefit the Marines and Navy.

An explosion on a residential street in the Chelsea neighborhood injured 29 people. Officials said the other injuries were minor, described as scrapes and bruises.

“The crudity of the devices in all three cases certainly doesn’t point to any group that’s been developing (improvised explosive devices) for years”, said a United States official involved in the investigation who requested anonymity to discuss the inquiry.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the blast, which happened at about 8.30pm on West 23rd street, an “intentional act”.

Nearby resident Sam Smith, 50, said he was closing the shades of his apartment when the blast hit.

New York City police say they’ve blown up the second device found blocks away from where a bomb exploded in Manhattan.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said the Chelsea explosion was not in a dumpster but next to one in the street.

No detail about the extent of damage was immediately available.

Chris Gonzalez, visiting from Dallas, was having dinner with friends at a restaurant in the area.

The FBI and Homeland Security officials, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arson and explosive task force, were at the scene. Investigators are trying to figure out whether the Chelsea bombing is connected to another explosion Saturday in New Jersey, which also may have used a cell phone as a trigger.

He encouraged New Yorkers to go about their day as usual.

After noticing “wires and a pipe”, they dropped the package and alerted police.

They are now being questioned at the FBI’s headquarters in Manhaten.

The bombing came just 11 hours after a pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey garbage can on a charity run route, though that blast injured none. The municipality directly borders one of the busiest airports in the country and sits just across a narrow body of water from the New York City border.
