No cell phones or electronic timing devices were found, Bollwage said.

Commuter trains are resuming service after one of five devices found in a backpack near a New Jersey train station exploded while a bomb squad robot was attempting to disarm it. On Sunday, five explosive devices were discovered at a New Jersey train station.

As many as five potential explosive devices tumbled out of the backpack when it was emptied, Mr Bollwage said.

“Whoever threw it into the can was probably trying to get rid of it”.

Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was working to disarm one of five devices found in the same bag in a trash can by two men at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday near the Elizabeth train station.

“No law enforcement officer believes they’re ever off duty anymore”, Roderick told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield. As the robot was “cutting wires” on the first device, it went off, startling everyone at the scene. It’s tiny bars, where you go to grab a drink, grab a bite to eat, watch a film.

New Jersey Transit says Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains began rolling at 5:30 a.m. Monday. It was yet unclear when train service would re-open, but commuters were advised to seek alternate means of transportation.

The New York Daily News reported that weapons were found in the auto.

In the Midwest, an assailant reported to be Somali-American went on a stabbing spree in a shopping mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, injuring nine people before being shot dead by an off-duty police officer. All have been released from a hospital.

Spokeswoman Kelly Langmesser described as “a vehicle of interest in the investigation”.

“The investigation is now focusing on one individual”, he said.

The pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, ahead of a charity 5K race benefiting Marines and sailors. Members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force were investigating the blast along with New York Police Department detectives, fire marshals and other federal investigators.

Authorities are questioning people to determine if there is a possible connection between the devices found in the neighboring states.

Authorities investigating the New York explosion case were searching on Monday for the 28-year-old New Jersey man, saying he may be armed and risky, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said. “This is freedom. This is democracy, and we’re not going to allow them to take that from us”.

An explosion in Manhattan on Saturday injured 29 people.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized USA citizen from Afghanistan with an address in Elizabeth, N.J., should be considered armed and risky, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in one of a series of TV appearances just minutes after the photo was released. “Was it a political motivation? What we didn’t know yesterday, we don’t know yet, is anyone taking credit for it and is it linked to global terrorism”. The Manhattan blast took place on West 23rd Street around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in an area frequented by shoppers and diners. Four blocks away on 27th Street, a pressure-cooker device was found with a piece of paper with writing on it close by, officials said.

Sources told CBS News surveillance video shows a person planting at least one of the pressure cooker bombs that rocked Manhattan.

USA authorities said the motive of all three attacks was unclear, but elected officials quickly identified them as terror-related.

The New York Police Department tweeted early Sunday that the device has been safely removed from West 27th Street by the bomb squad.

Investigators at the FBI’s lab in Quantico, Virginia, were set to look to see if the three devices in the NY area had a common design, although a USA official familiar with the inquiry said that would not be proof in itself the attacks were linked.

The discovery may be significant as the investigation continues into whether there’s any connection between two New York City devices and the pipe bomb at the Jersey shore.

The heightened alert comes both as a result of Saturday’s explosion and because world leaders are gathering here Monday for the United Nations General Assembly. “But there may very well turn out to be a link to foreign terrorist organizations”, he said.
