WABC-TV footage showed a man believed to be 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher in Linden, N.J. He appeared to be conscious and looking around.
The arrest came just hours after police issued a bulletin and photo of Rahami, a naturalized USA citizen from Afghanistan with an address in Elizabeth, N.J.
The backpack in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was found around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in a wastebasket outside a neighborhood pub – about 500 feet from a train trestle, officials said.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized USA citizen from Afghanistan with an address in Elizabeth, N.J., should be considered armed and unsafe, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in one of a series of TV appearances just minutes after the photo was released.
The incident came after the United States was shaken by three attacks at the weekend, including a Saturday night bombing that injured 29 in Manhattan and a stabbing incident at a Minnesota shopping mall that wounded nine.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo had said earlier that it didn’t appear to be linked to worldwide terrorism. He said a second device found blocks away from the bombing appeared “similar in design” to the first.
Passengers said they were stuck on trains for hours Sunday night.
New Jersey law enforcement is trying to determine if a pipe bomb that exploded at a seaside community was related to terrorism.
No one was hurt, but Bollwage said: “I can imagine that if all five of them went off at the same time, that the loss of life could have been enormous if there was an event going on”.
Hillary Clinton condemned what she described as “apparent terrorist attacks” in Minnesota, New Jersey and NY.
The Chelsea explosion occurred at about 21:00 (01:00 GMT on Sunday) on West 23rd St. Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said the devices were found in a bag in a trash can by two men who reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package.
When police arrived, one of the officers “tried to rouse him”, Sarnacki said.
Governor Cuomo said: ‘We’re not going to let them win.
In one video obtained by police, a man is seen crossing the street in the vicinity of where the explosive device appears to have been left. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are also investigating the discovery Sunday of five devices in a backpack near a New Jersey train station.
According to one federal law enforcement official, devices in both explosions included cellphones, but the New Jersey device contained evidence of a black powder explosive.
The FBI is evaluating a claim of responsibility for the New York City bombing on the social blogging service Tumblr.
A pair of bombs planted in Manhattan this weekend may be connected to an global terror network, New York Gov. Amtrak trains heading to NY were held in Trenton early Monday.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about an ongoing investigation, says the device was found inside a plastic bag on West 27th Street.
And on Sunday night, a backpack with multiple bombs inside was found in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The security alert came just hours after a pipe bomb blast at a New Jersey charity run in aid of US Marines and sailors.
“New York Mayor Bill De Blasio called the incident an “intentional” act” but said the city had received “no specific and credible threat” from any terror organization.
