NJ Transit service was suspended early Monday between Newark Liberty Airport and Elizabeth, and New Jersey-bound Amtrak trains were being held at New York Penn Station, officials said, while New York-bound Amtrak trains were being held in Trenton.
Two men had reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package after finding it at the train station around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Three pipe-bomb-type devices wired together were found near the boardwalk at the Seaside Park event, said officials, adding that the devices were rudimentary and only one of them detonated. Investigators also say an unexploded pressure-cooker device was found blocks away.
Bollwage said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was attempting to disarm one of the devices when it exploded at around 12:30 a.m. Monday.
The arrests come about 24 hours after a large blast ripped through W. 23rd St. near 6th Ave., injuring scores of people with shrapnel late Saturday. Early Monday, FBI agents swarmed the apartment. Amtrak trains heading to NY were held in Trenton early Monday.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man suspected in bombings in NY and New Jersey, is now in custody after a shootout with police, sources said. But another bomb was found several blocks away, but it never went off. They accused the city of targeting them because they were Muslim, according to the the civil rights complaint filed by Mohammad Rahami and two relatives.
According to NBC News’ Miguel Almaguer, Bollwage said Sunday’s device “could have hurt” a lot of people if it had gone off. Law enforcement are working to disable the other devices found in the backpack. The first bombing took place in Seaside Park, New Jersey, on Saturday morning, when a pipe bomb exploded near the starting line of the “Semper Five” 5K race supporting the Marine Corps.
The FBI is looking to transport the remaining bombs found in Elizabeth to the FBI facility Quantico, Virginia, for evaluation, according to the New York Times.
1,000 state troopers and National Guard soldiers have been deployed to provide extra security in New York City.
A bombing during a bustling Saturday night in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood left 29 people injured.
“He could be armed and unsafe”, de Blasio said, warning that residents should be vigilant and report sightings to authorities.
Police later announced that the incident had been connected the Chelsea explosion, and said the same man was being sought in both. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the bombs had some similarities but provided no other details.
